SPORTS IN SOCIETY
COURSE DEFINITION:
PHYSICAL EDUCATION’S GOAL IS TO DEVELOP AN APPRECIATION OF PHYSICAL ACTIVITY AND TO TEACH THE SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE NECESSARY TO PARTICIPATE IN THOSE ACTIVITIES. ACQUISITION OF RULES, TECHNIQUES AND STRATEGIES SHOULD BE ACHIEVED THROUGH PARTICIPATING IN A VARIETY OF PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES. IN ADDITION TO PROMOTING PHYSICAL FITNESS AND SKILLS, PHYSICAL EDUCATION SHOULD ALSO INSTILL VALUES OF SPORTSMANSHIP, HONESTY, COOPERATION AND TEAMWORK.
GENERAL OBJECTIVES:
1. THE STUDENT WILL BE ABLE TO DO VARIOUS FLEXIBILITY EXERCISES.
2. THE STUDENT WILL TRY TO DEVELOP A HIGH LEVEL OF PHYSICAL FITNESS.
3. THE STUDENT WILL PARTICIPATE IN A VARIETY OF SPORTING ACTIVITIES.
4. THE STUDENT WILL BE AWARE OF SAFETY ISSUES WITH EACH ACTIVITY.
5. THE STUDENT WILL DEMONSTRATE SPORTSMANSHIP AND TEAMWORK.

** THE GOAL WILL BE TO MEET AS MANY STANDARDS AS POSSIBLE FOR APPROPRIATE AGE.

** ONE DAY A WEEK WILL BE DEDICATED TO AEROBIC CONDITIONING, WHICH WILL CONSIST
OF DISTANCE TRAINING, INTERVAL TRAINING, OR AEROBIC MOVEMENTS.
SPORTS IN SOCIETY CLASS RULES
1. CHEWING GUM OR CANDY IS NOT PERMITTED.
2. ROUGH PLAY OR HORSEPLAY WILL NOT BE TOLERATED.
3. EACH STUDENT IS TO DRESS IN THE FOLLOWING:
- ATHLETIC SHORTS OR SWEAT PANTS
- T-SHIRT OR SWEAT TOP
- ATHLETIC SHOES WITH LACES TIED AND CLEAN SOLES
NO PROFANITY ON CLOTHES OR ALCOHOL, TOBACCO, OR DRUG PROMOTING ADS.
NO JEWELRY (WATCHES, EARRINGS, NECKLACES, BRACELETS)
4. EACH STUDENT MAY EARN 10-40 PARTICIPATION POINTS PER DAY. YOUR GRADE WILL BE DETERMINED BY AVERAGING THESE POINTS AS WELL AS ANY QUIZZES, EXAMS AND PHYSICAL FITNESS TESTS THAT ARE GIVEN.
5. STUDENTS MAY HAVE PARTICIPATION POINTS DEDUCTED FOR THE FOLLOWING:
- NO PHYSICAL EDUCATION CLOTHES (100% OF THE DAYS POINTS)
- LACK OF/OR NO PARTICIPATION (1-40 POINTS) (DON’T STAND AROUND!!!!!)
- UNEXCUSED ABSENCES OR OUT-OF-SCHOOL SUSPENSIONS (100% OF THE DAYS PTS)
- IN-SCHOOL/ALTERNATIVE SUSPENSIONS (100% OF THE DAYS POINTS)
- VACATION DAYS (100% OF DAYS POINTS – REPORTS MUST BE DONE TO REGAIN PTS.)
- IF YOU ARE ON A FIELD TRIP OR HAVE AN EXCUSED ABSENCE, YOU WON’T LOSE POINTS. THOSE POINTS FOR THAT DAY WON’T BE INCLUDED IN THE TOTAL POSSIBLE, (I.E. IT WON’T COUNT FOR YOU OR AGAINST YOU).
6. POINTS MAY BE REGAINED FOR VACATIONS, IN-SCHOOL & ALTERNATIVE SUSPENSIONS, AND NO PARTICIPATION THAT IS ACCOMPANIED WITH A NOTE FROM A DOCTOR OR THE SCHOOL NURSE. ALL OTHER INSTANCES ARE UP TO THE INSTRUCTOR’S DISCRETION.
7. TO REGAIN PARTICIPATION POINTS, THE STUDENT MUST WRITE A ONE PAGE REPORT
ON A MAGAZINE OR NEWSPAPER ARTICLE DEALING WITH SPORTS. THE FIRST ½ OF THE REPORT SHOULD BE A REVIEW OF THE ARTICLE, THE SECOND ½ OF THE REPORT SHOULD BE YOUR OPINION OF THE ARTICLE. A COPY OF THE ARTICLE MUST ACCOMPANY THE REPORT. SOME OR ALL POINTS WILL BE CREDITED.
8. REPORT MUST BE RECEIVED WITHIN 7 DAYS OF THE CLASS IN QUESTION TO RECEIVE
CREDIT. AFTER 7 DAYS, THE GRADE FOR THAT CLASS WILL BECOME A ZERO.
9. LOCK YOU PERSONAL ITEMS/VALUABLES IN YOUR LOCKER. DO NOT GIVE YOUR COMBO TO OTHERS. ONLY USE THE LOCK PROVIDED AND IF IT BECOMES DAMAGED OR LOST; IT WILL BE YOUR RESPONSIBILITY TO PAY FOR IT. CLEAN UP AFTER YOURSELF: TRASH IN TRASH CANS, FLUSH TOILETS/URINALS. DO NOT BRING FOOD/POP IN THE LOCKER ROOMS.
10. YOU ARE TO ENTER AND LEAVE THE GYMNASIUM THROUGH THE DOORS BY THE GIRL’S LOCKER ROOM. STAY BEHIND THE SILVER STRIPE & OUT OF HALLWAYS UNTIL BELL RINGS. (DETENTION)
11. YOU WILL HAVE 3 MINUTES AT THE BEGINNING OF CLASS, AND APPROXIMATELY 6 MINUTES AT THE END TO CHANGE CLOTHES: USE DEODORANT, SHOWER, WIPE OFF SWEAT, ETC.
12. 5+ UNEXCUSED NO DRESSES IN A 9 WEEKS = NO SIGNING OF FIELD TRIP/VACATION FORMS.
13. YOU MUST SUCCESSFULLY COMPLETE 70% OF THE AEROBIC DAYS PER 9 WEEKS IN ORDER TO RECEIVE A PASSING GRADE FOR THE SEMESTER.

A = 100-93% C = 76-73% 1ST OFFENSE - WARNING
A- = 92-90% C- = 72-70% 2ND OFFENSE – ONE-ON-ONE TALK
B+ = 89-87% D+ = 69-67% 3RD OFFENSE – DETENTION
B = 86-83% D = 66-63% 4TH OFFENSE – REFERRED TO OFFICE
B- = 82-80% D- = 62-60% IF OFFENSE IS SERIOUS, YOU MAY START AT #4.
C+ = 79-77% E = 59-0%
