From Snow Days to E-Days
The Ohio Legislature is currently considering a bill to allow schools to replace calamity days with electronic learning days. We see this as an outstanding opportunity to keep the continuity of learning from being interrupted during a critical time of the year. I would argue that the learning taking place in the classroom during additional days in June does not compare to the days lost during the winter months. So many times those add-on days in June end up being baby sitting service and entertainment days instead of valuable learning.
A community with adequate technology and training can have meaningful instruction and learning continue without interruption from weather and emergencies. This site proposes some examples of mathematics lessons that can provide some continued learning when students and teachers are isolated to their homes.
I do not propose that these lessons are perfect or the best but only examples of how teachers might construct mathematics lessons that could have a positive impact on students learning mathematics. I would invite others to submit to me other examples and suggestions.
